Put the Defender outboard on passenger side for the teacher to help your son in/out of the car. It’s easy to buckle/unbuckle; by the time school starts, your son may be able to even do it himself! (And if the teacher or any other school parents complain to you about the extra 30 seconds it takes to buckle a child into a 5 point harness, tell them that at his young age and size, those 30 seconds make ALL the difference to his safety in a car crash. Most apprehension is a combination of real range limitations and great if unknown. The range is what it is, the unknown (Bev v ice) is a case of”the devil you know”. Bev (and the i3 in particular) has exceeded my expectations in that regard. My only wish is that the car has a range of 300+ miles.

I chime in here because I have extensive experience with both. The M235/240 has a superior powertrain. It smoother, less peaky, and revs more freely. Body control is also superior on the BMW through the corners, but it does ride harsher than the Benz due to the short wheelbase. The Benz has a hugely superior EPS system and turns in sharper, making it feel like a more aggressive car. The BMW is a lot more playful in the corner, though, where the Benz can be overly neutral.
I’m not going to sit here and say that anyone who is at the top, or who has a fancy degree on their wall, is lazy. I won’t say that at all. I will say, though, that too often many of these guys simply put themselves on a pedestal that really has no business being beneath their feet. Youre probably going to need a more BMW specific scan tool to see what faults are pending if the car is indeed misfiring. For a short term fix, try something like a diesel additive to try and clean the fuel up, maybe someone used cheap or incorrect fuel in the past. If you still have issues and no codes with a decent scanner, then its possible you have something in the drivetrain. Im not that familiar with the diesels, but the earlier X3, like 2007 2013 had some issues with the transfer case, which would sort of chatter/slip under acceleration and make it feel like a misfire or stumble. Also, try disconnecting the battery, and leaving the key forward so the dash is lit up but not running, and maybe it will do a throttle body adaptation after 30 seconds or so. Lastly, failing fuel injections, gummed up intkaes, and carbon buildup are not uncommon to any BMW, so it may be something along those lines.

We thought about a crossover too but when you need as much room as I do, the size of crossovers becomes deceptive and you don get the cabin passenger space of a large sedan in a CUV until you start looking at the really big ones and my wife didn want something that big. 4 years ago I discovered Bogleheads and since then, I’ve followed the 3 fund passive index funds approach and turned all my attention to improving in my professional space. It turns my stomach thinking back how much more savings I would have today if had cashed out at the top or even if I just stuck to 3 fund index investing from the beginning. Today I still have over $100k in carried over cap losses I been writing off in my tax returns $3k at a time for many more years to come and I consider that tuition from the school of hard knocks and reminders of my hubris.
